Kurt Østervig easy chairs
This rare pair of hunting easy chairs was designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Kurt Østervig and produced in the 1950s by KP Møbler in Denmark. The design exemplifies Østervig’s ability to blend functional strength with elegant simplicity, creating pieces that are both robust and visually refined.
Each chair features a solid oak frame, crafted with clean lines and subtle joinery that highlight the natural grain and color variation of the wood. The oak has aged gracefully, showing minor wear and surface patina consistent with age and careful use. The construction emphasizes structural honesty, with exposed joints and a slightly reclined profile that enhances comfort while retaining visual clarity.
The seat and backrest are made from thick saddle tan leather, secured to the frame with leather straps and brass buckles. The leather has developed a rich patina over time, deepening in tone and acquiring surface creases that emphasize the organic nature of the material. The adjustable strap system provides flexibility while also serving as a decorative element, underscoring the functionalist roots of the design. The combination of warm-toned leather and natural oak creates a balanced aesthetic that feels both earthy and sophisticated.
Kurt Østervig (1912–1986) was a prominent figure in mid-century Danish design, known for his dedication to natural materials and user-oriented forms. Originally trained as a shipbuilder, Østervig brought a structural precision to his furniture work, often incorporating traditional materials in innovative ways. His collaborations with cabinetmakers such as KP Møbler resulted in limited-production works that emphasized craftsmanship and enduring quality.
KP Møbler, active during the height of the Danish modern movement, produced high-end furniture in small batches. Their workshop was known for collaborating closely with designers to execute complex pieces with great attention to material integrity and finish.
These hunting chairs remain in good vintage condition, with well-preserved frames and leather that shows age-related wear in a manner consistent with their intended rugged aesthetic. Each chair measures 78.5 cm in width, 73 cm in depth, 75 cm in height, and has a seat height of 32 cm. These dimensions convert approximately to 30.9 inches wide, 28.7 inches deep, 29.5 inches high, and 12.6 inches seat height.
