Lisa Johansson-Pape stools
This rare pair of stools, model Apila, was designed by Lisa Johansson-Pape and produced by Stockmann-Orno Oy in Finland during the 1970s. Each stool is constructed from solid pine and features a distinctive clover-like seat made up of four rounded square segments arranged radially. The legs are slightly tapered and splayed outward, providing both stability and a dynamic visual stance.
The pine wood exhibits a warm honey color with visible growth rings and natural grain variations that emphasize the material’s organic qualities. The design embodies Johansson-Pape’s approach of combining sculptural form with functional utility, a hallmark of Finnish modernist design. The organic geometry of the seat contrasts with the simplicity of the construction, drawing on vernacular Nordic furniture traditions interpreted through a modernist lens.
Both stools are in good vintage condition, showing expected signs of use such as surface marks, minor scuffs, and a natural patina on the wood. These age-related characteristics do not compromise the structural integrity of the pieces.
Each stool measures 35 cm in width and depth, and 40 cm in height, approximately 13.8 inches square by 15.7 inches high. The Apila model is considered rare and is infrequently encountered in the market.
