Lisa Johansson-Pape

Carin Elisabeth (Lisa) Johansson-Pape, born Johansson 21 January 1907 in Helsinki, died there 5 October 1989, was a Finnish designer, best known for her lamps. She was the most influential Finnish designer of luminaires in the second half of the 20th century. For her, functionality was more important than design.

Biography
After graduating from the Aalto University College of Art, Design and Architecture (Finnish: Aalto-yliopiston taiteiden ja tääääääääää) at the Aalto University in Helsinki in 1927, she started working at Kylmäkoski designing furniture. In 1933 she became a member of the Friends of Finnish Crafts, where she was artistic director from 1951 to 1985. She designed furniture for Stockmann in 1937 and lamps for Stockmann's Orno factory in 1942. She was one of the founders of the Illuminating Engineering Society (Suomen Valoteknillinen Seura).

Johansson-Pape has also created installations for 150 churches, including Eckerö church, Barnets borg and for the ships Ilmatar, Aallotar, Finnpartner, Finnhansa and the icebreaker Karhu.

Johansson-Pape has lectured at Aalto University's School of Art, Design and Architecture and written articles about lighting. She was also an exhibition architect and organized exhibitions about carpets and lamps. She participated in New York's World Fair of 1939 and at the Milan Triennale, where she received a prize in 1951. In 1954 she received a prize again at the same Triennale for a lamp in opal glass that she designed for Iittala. In 1957 she received the Order of the Lion of Finland. In 1963 she designed several vases for Iittala.

Several of Johansson-Pape's lighting items are still manufactured by Innojok and Keraplast.

Johansson-Papes is represented at the National Museum in Stockholm.
