Märta Måås-Fjetterström carpet

The carpet titled Grön Äng (Green Meadow) is a rare flat-weave textile designed by Märta Måås-Fjetterström in 1928 and produced posthumously by Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB in Båstad, Sweden, following her death in 1941. This piece is handwoven in wool using the traditional Swedish rölakan technique, known for its tight, durable weave and geometric patterning. The design is composed of a gridded layout with repeated stylized floral or star motifs, each set within square medallions arranged in longitudinal rows. These are framed by narrow border bands in colors that complement the central motifs.

The color palette predominantly features green tones forming the background, accented by details in navy blue, off-white, ochre yellow, red, and natural beige. The wool is richly dyed with natural tonal variation, creating a textured surface with visual depth. The short ends of the carpet are finished with tightly braided fringes left in their natural, undyed state, maintaining traditional craftsmanship.

Märta Måås-Fjetterström (1873–1941) was a seminal figure in Swedish textile art and a pioneer in 20th-century Scandinavian applied arts. She founded her workshop in Båstad in 1919, where she merged Swedish folk motifs with modernist abstraction, developing a distinctive design language. The Grön Äng design exemplifies her thematic focus on stylized natural landscapes conveyed through color, form, and geometry.

This carpet is in very good vintage condition, displaying vibrant colors and a well-preserved weave. Minor and even wear consistent with age and careful use is present, but there are no visible repairs or damage. The woven initials from the Märta Måås-Fjetterström workshop authenticate the piece, underscoring its provenance.

The carpet measures 180 cm in width and 255 cm in length, which corresponds to approximately 70.9 inches by 100.4 inches, making it a substantial example of early 20th-century Swedish textile art.
