Mogens Voltelen easy chair
This exceptionally rare easy chair, model MV60, was designed by Danish architect and designer Mogens Voltelen and produced by the master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder. The chair is a distinguished example of mid-century Danish craftsmanship and design innovation, harmonizing sculptural form with functional integrity. Constructed with a solid oak frame, the piece showcases refined woodworking, particularly in the angled, faceted legs and gently sweeping armrests. The oak possesses a warm, golden-brown tone and displays fine grain patterns that emphasize the natural qualities of the material.
The seat and backrest are composed of the original natural grain leather, which has developed a patina over time. The leather presents a rich, earthy coloration with visible signs of age, including subtle discoloration and surface wear, consistent with careful use and lending the chair a sense of authenticity. The leather elements are fixed to the frame using exposed leather lacing, a distinctive feature that reinforces the artisanal nature of the design. This method of attachment allows the leather to remain tensioned while contributing to the visual and tactile complexity of the piece.
The overall form of the chair combines organic curves with strict geometric control, creating a silhouette that is both grounded and airy. The profile, defined by a gently reclined back and precisely angled seat, prioritizes ergonomic comfort without sacrificing formal clarity.
Mogens Voltelen, active during the mid-20th century, was known for his ability to integrate modernist principles with traditional Danish materials and techniques. His designs often reveal a sensitivity to human proportions and an appreciation for expressive detailing. Niels Vodder, one of Denmark’s foremost cabinetmakers, was widely respected for his close collaborations with leading designers such as Finn Juhl and for his uncompromising standards in craftsmanship. His workshop was instrumental in shaping the legacy of Danish modern furniture.
This chair embodies the fusion of innovative design and meticulous cabinetmaking. It stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of two important figures in Danish furniture history.
