Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel easy chairs
This very rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel and produced collaboratively by Ludvig Pontoppidan and R. Wengler in Denmark in 1950. The chairs are composed of solid teak frames supporting handwoven rattan shells that form deep, rounded seats. The circular, bowl-like construction and slightly tilted stance give the chairs a sculptural quality while maintaining comfort and lightness.
The rattan is tightly and skillfully woven, showing subtle variations in tone that emphasize its natural character. The teak base is elegantly proportioned, with softly rounded legs and structural crossbars that provide stability without compromising the sense of openness. Each chair expresses the Ditzels’ mastery of organic form and material integrity — a hallmark of their work within the Danish modern movement.
Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel were among Denmark’s most innovative postwar designers, known for exploring new materials and forms that blurred the boundaries between craft and industrial design. Their collaboration with master cabinetmaker Ludvig Pontoppidan and wickerwork specialist R. Wengler resulted in several pioneering furniture pieces, including these chairs, which stand as early examples of sculptural rattan furniture within Scandinavian design.
Both chairs are in excellent vintage condition with signs of age and use, developing a warm patina to the teak and a beautifully even tone to the rattan.
