Nanny Still vase
This glass vase was designed by Nanny Still and produced by Riihimäen Lasi Oy in Finland during the 1950s. Made from hand-blown glass, it features a soft purple hue that transitions from a more opaque base to a translucent upper section. The vase has a tall, cylindrical body tapering into an elongated neck with a delicately flared, asymmetrical spout. Subtle irregularities in its form and surface texture reveal the artisanal techniques employed in its creation.
The design embodies Still’s modern Scandinavian glass approach, combining clean lines and organic forms with refined color gradients. Its elongated proportions give the vase an elegant, sculptural presence, functioning both as a practical vessel and a decorative object. The narrow opening suits a single stem or minimalist floral arrangement, enhancing the piece’s delicate visual balance.
Nanny Still was a Finnish designer recognized for her innovative contributions to glass and ceramics, notably through her work with Riihimäen Lasi Oy. Active from the late 1940s onward, she was instrumental in advancing Finnish glass design, blending modernist principles with expressive forms. Established in 1910, Riihimäen Lasi was a leading Finnish glass manufacturer known for producing high-quality, experimental designs that helped define mid-century Scandinavian aesthetics.
The vase remains in original condition, showing minor age-related wear at the base. It measures 6 cm in diameter and 33.5 cm in height (2.4 by 13.2 inches), exemplifying refined craftsmanship and elegant form.
