Niels Kofoed easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model Lars, was designed by Danish furniture designer Niels Kofoed and produced by Niels Kofoed in Denmark during the 1960s. They are crafted in oak with brass details and have been newly reupholstered in a deep blue wool fabric, creating a striking visual contrast between the warm wood tones and the saturated upholstery. The design reflects the understated elegance and functional clarity characteristic of Scandinavian modernism, combining craftsmanship with refined proportions and an inviting aesthetic.
The chairs are defined by their light yet solid oak frames, with clean, architectural lines and slightly angled legs that emphasize stability and balance. The open, slatted backrests and gently curved armrests contribute to both visual lightness and ergonomic comfort. The seat and back cushions are generously proportioned, upholstered in high-quality wool that offers both durability and tactile softness, while the brass fittings subtly highlight the material quality and construction.
Niels Kofoed was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to merge simplicity with sophistication. His work often emphasizes honest materials, precise joinery, and functional form—principles that made his designs enduring examples of Danish mid-century craftsmanship.
These chairs embody the ideals of Scandinavian design from the mid-20th century, where form follows function without compromising on elegance. Their combination of natural materials, thoughtful detailing, and timeless proportions makes them versatile pieces suitable for both modern and classic interiors.
