Niels Kofoed
Niels Koefoed (born 1929) was a Danish furniture designer and factory owner associated with Danish modern furniture during the mid-20th century. He is best known for his elegant dining chairs produced by Kofoeds Hornslet, a furniture manufacturer founded by his father, Einar Kofoed, in the town of Hornslet. His designs reflect the refined craftsmanship and material quality of Danish modernism, with particular emphasis on sculpted wooden frames, balanced proportions, and comfortable dining furniture for the modern home.
Biography
Niels Kofoed became closely associated with Kofoeds Hornslet, the family furniture company founded in the 1920s. The factory specialized in fine furniture and became particularly known for dining room furniture, including chairs and tables in materials such as teak, rosewood, and later cherry. Through the company, Kofoed developed furniture that combined careful woodworking with the clean and functional expression of Danish modern design.
His most recognized works are a series of dining chairs designed during the late 1950s and 1960s. These include the Peter Chair from 1957, the Lis Chair from 1961, the Eva Chair from 1964, and the Ingrid Chair from the 1960s. The chairs are known for their refined backs, elegant proportions, and carefully shaped wooden details, each offering a slightly different interpretation of the Danish dining chair.
The Eva Chair became one of Kofoed’s most popular designs, distinguished by its three vertical slats in the backrest and its light, structured appearance. The Ingrid Chair, by contrast, has a more organic and flowing form, while the Lis Chair features a ladder-back construction. Together, these designs show Kofoed’s ability to work within a consistent furniture language while giving each model its own distinct character.
Kofoed’s furniture was produced in woods such as teak and rosewood, materials strongly associated with Danish mid-century furniture. As rosewood later became less commonly used, some models were also produced in cherry. The chairs were designed for everyday use but carried a high level of craftsmanship, making them both practical and refined.
Today, Niels Kofoed is remembered for his contribution to Danish modern dining furniture. His work remains sought after on the vintage market for its quality construction, elegant silhouettes, and strong connection to the Danish cabinetmaking and furniture manufacturing tradition.
