Information

This freestanding sideboard, model NV-54, is a rare and highly refined example of Danish cabinetmaking from the mid-20th century. Designed by Niels Vodder and produced by his own workshop in Copenhagen during the 1950s, the piece exemplifies the confluence of functionality, craftsmanship, and the modernist ethos that defined Scandinavian design in the postwar period. Constructed in richly figured rosewood, the cabinet displays a deep, variegated grain pattern that contributes to the material’s visual depth and complexity. The overall form adheres to principles of clarity and proportion, with a rectangular cabinet body supported by sculpturally carved legs and integral side braces—elements that both stabilize the structure and contribute to its organic silhouette.

The front features sliding doors that open to reveal a carefully configured interior of drawers and adjustable shelving, allowing for practical use without compromising the minimalistic exterior. Noteworthy is Vodder’s attention to detail in the joinery and the subtle curvature of the supporting frame, which are hallmarks of his cabinetmaking philosophy. The sideboard carries the branded burn mark “Niels Vodder Cabinetmaker Copenhagen Denmark” confirming its authenticity and linking it to the artisanal production methods typical of Vodder’s workshop.

Niels Vodder was one of Denmark’s most esteemed cabinetmakers, particularly known for his collaborations with designers such as Finn Juhl. His workshop played a pivotal role in the elevation of Danish furniture design on the international stage during the mid-century period. The NV-54 sideboard reflects his dedication to technical precision and sculptural expression within the context of domestic furnishings. The current condition of the piece is excellent, with a preserved surface patina that bears witness to its age and careful maintenance, adding historical character to its already distinguished design.
