Niels Vodder sideboard
This is a rare freestanding sideboard, model NV-54, designed and produced by the Danish master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder. The sideboard is constructed from richly grained rosewood, presenting a deep brown base tone with variegated patterns of dark brown and black striations throughout the surface. The patina is warm and even, contributing to the refined presence of the piece.
The structure is defined by a rectilinear corpus that rests on an elegant sculptural frame with rounded tapering legs. Each side is flanked by sculpted vertical supports that subtly rise above the top surface and extend below the corpus, connecting to the lower stretcher rails. These vertical frame elements not only provide a dynamic aesthetic but also underline the artisanal quality of the joinery and construction. The corners and joints are executed with a high degree of precision and finish, highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship that characterizes Vodder’s work.
The tambour doors slide smoothly into the cabinet walls, revealing a finely arranged interior with multiple compartments. On one side, there are a series of shallow, felt-lined drawers with concave fronts, ideal for storing cutlery or documents. The opposing compartment is open with adjustable shelves, offering versatile storage options. The handles are integrated into the door design with gently rounded, inset pulls, keeping the visual profile understated and clean.
Niels Vodder (1892–1982) was one of the foremost Danish cabinetmakers of the 20th century, known for his close collaboration with architect and designer Finn Juhl. Vodder operated a renowned workshop in Copenhagen that produced small-scale, high-quality furniture designs, often characterized by sculptural forms and superior material selection. Unlike industrial production, his pieces were handcrafted in limited quantities, which contributes to their rarity and collectibility.
The condition of the sideboard is excellent, with only minor, age-appropriate signs of wear consistent with careful use. The rosewood retains its original finish, showing minimal surface wear and vibrant color depth.
The dimensions are 210 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 87 cm in height. This corresponds to approximately 82.7 inches wide, 19.7 inches deep, and 34.3 inches high.
