Nils Fougstedt bowl
This is a cast bronze bowl designed by Swedish sculptor and designer Nils Fougstedt and produced in the 1930s by the company Fabriksaktiebolaget Kronsilver (FAK). The vessel is characterized by a low, wide circular form with a pronounced cylindrical base and straight vertical walls, subtly flared at the rim. The outer surface is horizontally ribbed, giving it a textural rhythm that contrasts with the smooth interior. Its surface displays a natural patina developed over time, primarily in greenish hues interspersed with dark brown and black tones, characteristic of aged bronze.
Distinctive zoomorphic handles, each terminating in a stylized animal or possibly mythological head, project horizontally from opposite sides of the rim. These sculptural elements serve both a decorative and functional purpose, providing gripping points for handling the vessel. The handles’ forms are sharply defined yet retain a hand-modeled quality that enhances their expressive detail.
Nils Fougstedt (1881–1954) was an influential Swedish sculptor and decorative artist active in the early to mid-20th century. He worked across a variety of media including bronze, iron, and pewter, and was particularly known for his collaboration with Estrid Ericson and his role in the evolution of Svenskt Tenn’s early sculptural and applied arts output. Fougstedt’s works often drew inspiration from antiquity and Nordic folklore, emphasizing craftsmanship and stylized figuration.
Fabriksaktiebolaget Kronsilver (FAK), a Swedish metalware manufacturer, was active during the early 20th century, specializing in the production of bronze, pewter, and silver-plated household items. The company was known for its high-quality casting and finishing, often collaborating with leading Scandinavian designers.
The bowl is in good vintage condition, showing consistent wear and patina for its age, with no structural damage. It measures 28.5 cm in width (including handles), 18.5 cm in diameter at the body, and 8.5 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 11.2 inches wide, 7.3 inches in diameter, and 3.3 inches high.
