Information

This rare armchair, model J 3063, was designed by Ole Wanscher and produced by the master cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen in Denmark in 1962. Crafted from rosewood and upholstered in original black leather, the chair demonstrates Wanscher’s refined understanding of form, proportion, and material harmony. The design reflects his ability to merge classical craftsmanship with the modern sensibilities that defined mid-century Scandinavian furniture.

The chair’s structure is both elegant and architectural. The curved back legs, gently splayed, provide a sense of balance and movement, while the slender armrests — smoothly integrated into the frame — illustrate Iversen’s exceptional woodworking precision. The seat and backrest, covered in supple, patinated leather, create a subtle contrast to the warm tones and deep grain of the rosewood. This pairing of luxurious materials and restrained detailing captures the Danish pursuit of functional beauty.

Ole Wanscher (1903–1985) was one of the key figures of the Danish modern movement, celebrated for his ability to reinterpret traditional forms through the lens of contemporary design. His collaboration with A.J. Iversen, one of Denmark’s finest cabinetmakers, resulted in numerous pieces that exemplify the peak of Danish craftsmanship during the mid-20th century. Each piece was meticulously constructed using traditional joinery and hand-finished surfaces, ensuring longevity and timeless appeal.

This armchair remains in good vintage condition, showing signs of usage consistent with age and a beautiful natural patina on both the leather and wood. It is an exemplary piece of Scandinavian mid-century design — elegant, functional, and enduringly sophisticated.

Dimensions are 67 cm wide, 65 cm deep, and 88 cm high (26.4 x 25.6 x 34.6 in), with a seat height of 44 cm (17.3 in)
