Ole Wanscher coffee table
This rare coffee table was designed by Ole Wanscher and produced by P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. The table exemplifies refined Scandinavian mid-century design, characterized by meticulous craftsmanship, restrained proportions, and functional elegance.
Constructed from solid rosewood, the table features a round tabletop with softly chamfered edges supported by four round, tapering legs. The rosewood displays a rich grain with tones ranging from deep reddish-brown to nearly black, revealing well-defined linear and swirling patterns. The surface has developed a warm, even patina consistent with its age and retains factory stamps from both the designer and maker on the underside, confirming its authenticity.
Ole Wanscher (1903–1985), a prominent Danish architect and furniture designer, was closely associated with the functionalist movement and a key figure in 20th-century Scandinavian design. A student of Kaare Klint, Wanscher emphasized classical proportions, structural clarity, and understated luxury. His work balances traditional craftsmanship with modernist refinement.
P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik was known for collaborating with leading Danish designers and producing high-quality furniture in exotic hardwoods such as rosewood and teak. This coffee table reflects Danish modernism’s principles of lightness, honesty of materials, and structural logic. Its circular shape allows versatile placement, while the craftsmanship and material quality elevate it beyond mere utility.
The table measures 110 cm in diameter and 54 cm in height (approximately 43.3 by 21.3 inches). It is in very good vintage condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age and use.
