Ole Wanscher sofa
This rare hallway sofa was designed in 1933 by Danish architect and furniture designer Ole Wanscher and produced by the renowned cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen in Copenhagen. The piece is crafted in mahogany, a material often favored by Wanscher for its rich tones and fine grain, here forming a clean rectangular plinth base that also integrates a hidden storage compartment beneath the seat cushion. This dual function of seating and storage reflects Wanscher’s sensitivity to practicality as well as elegance in furniture design.
The seat and backrest are fitted with four loose cushions, upholstered in original niger leather in a warm brown tone. The leather has developed a notable patina, with visible wear and natural marks that testify to its age and authenticity. The cushions are button-tufted, which enhances the tactile surface while adding structure and depth to the upholstery. Signs of use are present throughout, consistent with a good vintage condition and over ninety years of history.
Ole Wanscher (1903–1985) was one of the leading figures of Danish modernism, trained under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His collaboration with A.J. Iversen, one of Denmark’s finest cabinetmakers, produced a number of highly refined pieces that combined architectural clarity with artisanal craftsmanship. Wanscher’s designs are known for their quiet elegance, often incorporating classical references interpreted through a modern lens.
This sofa represents the early phase of Danish functionalism, where modern ideals were merged with traditional cabinetmaking techniques. The geometric mahogany frame contrasts with the organic softness of the leather, underscoring the balance between form and function that defines Scandinavian design. As an early 1930s piece, it anticipates the more widely recognized mid-century modern style, situating itself as both a historical and aesthetic bridge in Danish furniture history.
