Oscar Antonsson box

Rare rectangular lidded box designed by Swedish sculptor and art historian Oscar Antonsson and produced by Athena in Ystad, Sweden, in 1940. Executed entirely in pewter, the object combines a rigorously geometric construction with figurative relief decoration, characteristic of Antonsson’s applied metalwork and of the transition between Swedish Grace, Art Deco and early Scandinavian modernism.

The box has a low, elongated rectangular form composed of straight folded sides and a flush-fitting hinged lid. A small projecting rectangular tab at the side provides a discreet means of opening the box. The exterior is predominantly silver-grey pewter, with variations in tone created by oxidation, handling and age. The interior is undecorated and retains the straightforward construction of the object, emphasizing the contrast between its functional container form and the more sculptural treatment of the lid.

The central panel of the lid is decorated in low relief with a kneeling female nude shown in profile. The figure is rendered through simplified, continuous contours, with one arm raised and the other crossing the torso. The hair, facial profile and elongated limbs are treated schematically rather than naturalistically. A lightly worked, irregular background contrasts with the smoother surrounding frame and emphasizes the raised outline of the figure. The subject reflects Antonsson’s recurring interest in the human figure and in imagery derived from Classical and Mediterranean art.

Oscar Arvid Antonsson (1898–1960) was a Swedish sculptor, draughtsman, art historian and museum curator. Alongside his artistic practice, he pursued an academic career in art history and joined Stockholm’s Nationalmuseum in 1930, later becoming a curator there. He trained as a sculptor, particularly during periods spent in Italy, and extensive travel in the Mediterranean region contributed to his interest in Classical art and figurative representation. His work encompassed sculpture, drawing, printmaking and decorative metalwork.

Antonsson initially designed metal objects for Ystad Metallindustri and subsequently became closely associated with AB Athena in Ystad. Athena was established in 1936 with Antonsson as a co-owner, and the Nationalmuseum records that he designed the majority of the company’s products. His work for the firm frequently translated sculptural subjects into functional objects in pewter and bronze, making reliefs of human figures an integral part of boxes, vessels and other domestic metalware.

The underside carries the Athena Ystad maker’s mark with the helmeted-head emblem and the Swedish pewter designation “TENN,” together with the year code O8. The mark provides an important material and production reference for the object. Antonsson’s documented work for Athena includes other figuratively decorated boxes from the late 1930s and early 1940s, demonstrating the continued use of relief decoration within the company’s production.

Stylistically, the box occupies an interesting position between Swedish Grace and Scandinavian modernism. The Classical female subject and elegantly simplified profile retain the figurative vocabulary associated with Swedish Grace and Antonsson’s archaeological and art-historical interests, while the flat rectangular construction, restrained surface treatment and absence of applied ornament move toward the functional clarity of Swedish modern design. The result is deliberately architectural: decoration is confined to a clearly defined central field while the surrounding structure remains geometrically plain.

The box is in good vintage condition with signs of use consistent with its age. The pewter displays fine scratches, rubbing, small marks and areas of oxidation and discoloration across both the exterior and interior. Slight irregularities and wear are visible along the edges and around the hinge and opening tab. The relief retains good definition, with the naturally developed surface patina accentuating its incised and raised contours.
