Information

This is a lidded jar designed by Oscar Antonsson in 1939 and produced by Athena Ystad, a Swedish metalware manufacturer active in the early 20th century known for its production in pewter and other decorative metals. The object is crafted primarily in pewter with a circular base in brown Bakelite, popular in the 1930s and 1940s for its durability and resistance to heat. The lid is topped with a spherical finial in matching pewter, contributing to the object’s strict geometric aesthetic, which reflects the functionalist tendencies of the Scandinavian pre-war design ethos.

The form is distinctly cylindrical with a flush-fitting lid that maintains the continuous cylindrical contour of the vessel. The matte, silvery-grey tone of the pewter is subtly patinated, and the piece remains in excellent condition, showing only minor surface marks consistent with age and material. The underside of the jar is stamped with the manufacturer’s mark “ATHENA YSTAD” the year number “N8”, and the designer’s name “OSCAR ANTONSSON”, Antonsson was a prominent Swedish designer active during the first half of the 20th century, known for his refined pewter and metalwork often associated with Swedish Grace and early functionalism.

This container is typical of the period’s design language, with a restrained silhouette and a preference for high-quality materials combined with industrial precision. The Bakelite base adds a warm chromatic contrast to the cool tone of the pewter.

The dimensions of the piece are 9.5 cm in diameter and 14.5 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 3.74 inches by 5.71 inches.
