Oscar Antonsson mirror

This very rare pewter mirror was designed by Oscar Antonsson and produced by Ystad Tenn in Sweden during the 1940s. It exemplifies Scandinavian craftsmanship with pronounced Art Deco influences, combining sculptural artistry with functional design. The mirror is set within a simple yet refined rectangular pewter frame, which incorporates a built-in shelf at the bottom, enhancing its practical use.

The upper section of the frame is adorned with a sculptural relief featuring a kneeling female figure positioned within a stylized seashell. Surrounding this central motif is fluid, organic scrollwork that adds decorative complexity and a dynamic sense of movement to the piece. The polished pewter surface contributes a soft reflective quality, characteristic of Ystad Tenn’s high-quality metalwork.

Oscar Antonsson (1898–1960) was a Swedish sculptor and designer renowned for his finely detailed metalwork. His style bridges classical and modernist aesthetics, producing objects that are both sculptural and functional. His collaborations with Ystad Tenn resulted in a range of decorative items marked by their artistic depth and craftsmanship.

Ystad Tenn was a leading Swedish producer of pewter objects throughout the 20th century. The company was noted for its collaboration with skilled designers and for producing metalwork that often incorporated Art Deco and early modernist elements, as reflected in this mirror.

The mirror remains in very good vintage condition, exhibiting minor patina and signs of age consistent with its era. The backplate carries the Ystad Tenn maker’s mark alongside Antonsson’s signature, confirming its provenance. The mirror measures 30 cm in width, 10.5 cm in depth, and 64.5 cm in height (approximately 11.8 by 4.1 by 25.4 inches).
