Oscar Nilsson sideboard
This very rare and unusually long sideboard was designed by Oscar Nilsson and produced by the Swedish cabinetmaker Jacob Wickman during the 1930s. Crafted from solid oak with veneered surfaces, the piece exemplifies a sculptural and architectural approach to furniture form, reflecting the transitional stylistic currents of early 20th-century Scandinavian design.
Measuring over three meters in length, the sideboard presents as a horizontal volume supported by six straight legs. The front is composed of six compartments, each fitted with a hinged door. The most distinctive feature lies in the deeply profiled, geometric door fronts, which consist of nested rectangular frames arranged in progressively smaller scales. This stepped relief treatment extends to the side panels as well, creating a rhythmic visual pattern that imbues the piece with depth and dynamic movement.
Each door opens to reveal a storage bay with adjustable shelving, combining practical versatility with formal symmetry. The craftsmanship is precise, evident in the fine joinery, well-balanced proportions, and uniform natural oak finish. The patina is even and well-developed, showing only minor wear primarily along the base and edges, consistent with careful use over time.
Oscar Nilsson is a lesser-known figure within Swedish design history, but this sideboard demonstrates his strong grasp of proportion and architectural detailing. Jacob Wickman, active during the interwar period, was recognized for producing high-quality bespoke furniture in limited quantities, often collaborating with architects and designers operating outside mainstream trends.
Stylistically, the piece belongs to the Nordic interwar movement, bridging the decorative language of Swedish Grace with the emerging functionalist tendencies of the 1930s. It embodies restrained elegance through repetition, symmetry, and integrated ornamentation that is structurally part of the design rather than superficially applied.
The sideboard measures 303 centimeters in width, 50 centimeters in depth, and 73 centimeters in height (approximately 119.3 x 19.7 x 28.7 inches).
