Oscar Nilsson

Oscar Nilsson (1895–1975) was a Swedish furniture and interior architect whose work spans the transition from Swedish Grace to early modernism. His designs reflect a refined sense of proportion, craftsmanship, and a strong connection to traditional cabinetmaking.

Biography

Nilsson studied at the Technical School in Stockholm, graduating in 1916 from the Higher School of Industrial Arts. He collaborated with several leading cabinetmakers, including Jacob Wickman, Hjalmar Jackson, and Hjalmar Wikström, and produced designs for institutions such as Nordiska Kompaniet and Svenska Möbelfabrikerna in Bodafors.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Nilsson established himself within the Swedish design scene, contributing to major exhibitions both in Sweden and internationally. At the 1927 exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, he presented a cabinet in the Swedish Grace style, executed by Jacob Wickman. He was also closely involved in the interior design of the ocean liner M/S Kungsholm (1927–1928) as a collaborator to Carl Bergsten.

At the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, Nilsson presented interiors that balanced historical references with emerging modern ideals. His work was noted for its refined reinterpretation of earlier styles, combined with a high level of material and decorative detail. He continued to exhibit internationally, including at the 1937 Paris World’s Fair, where his designs were shown as part of “Nordic Furniture Art.”

In parallel with his exhibition work, Nilsson designed interiors for residential and public projects in Stockholm. In 1941, he was appointed chief interior architect at the Swedish State Railways (SJ), where he developed interiors for first-class railway carriages, applying principles of comfort, durability, and functional clarity.

His work is represented in the collections of the Nordiska Museet, reflecting his role in shaping Swedish furniture design during a period of transition from decorative classicism to modern functionalism.
