Oscar Nilsson table
This rare and refined table was designed by Oscar Nilsson and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in 1938. Its construction combines a sculptural mahogany base with a circular top veneered in Thuya root, a material known for its dense, highly figured grain pattern. The contrast between the smooth, flowing geometry of the base and the complex surface of the top reflects the attention to craftsmanship associated with Nordiska Kompaniet’s production during the late 1930s.
The circular tabletop displays the characteristic swirling and clustered patterns of Thuya root, arranged in a radial veneer layout that enhances the natural symmetry of the material. The surface is bordered by a solid mahogany edge, giving definition to the round form and visually grounding the richly textured top. The mahogany base is shaped with gentle curves and tapering lines, consisting of a conical central column transitioning into three wide, arched legs. These legs form a stable tripod structure and demonstrate Nilsson’s interest in combining functional stability with an elegant sculptural presence.
Designed as part of NK’s high-quality furniture collections, the table can serve multiple purposes, functioning as a side table, console table or coffee table depending on placement. Its formal lightness, combined with the sophistication of the materials, aligns it with the Scandinavian modern tradition emerging in the 1930s, in which classic craftsmanship met increasingly streamlined forms.
The table is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and patina, including minor surface wear and natural ageing of the lacquered finish. These traces are consistent with its age and maintain the authenticity of the piece.
The diameter is 80.5 cm, approximately 31.7 inches, and the height is 55 cm, approximately 21.7 inches.
