Otto Schulz attrib. cabinet
This rare cabinet, attributed to Otto Schulz and produced by Boet in Sweden during the 1940s, is constructed in beech and finished with blue imitation leather panels accented by brass rivets. The cabinet stands on tapered beech legs that elevate the structure and give it a light yet grounded appearance. Its overall form is rectangular with clean, linear edges softened by the warm tone of the wood.
The two front doors are the defining visual element of the piece. Each door is clad in textured blue imitation leather arranged within a beech frame. Brass rivets are applied in an intersecting diamond pattern across the leather surface, creating a decorative geometric structure characteristic of Schulz’s well-known Bo-Point technique. This combination of materials—wood, leather, and metal—produces a tactile and visually layered façade, typical of Boet’s production and Otto Schulz’s interest in furniture that doubled as decorative interior architecture.
The cabinet opens to reveal a functional interior suited for storage, with adjustable shelving behind the doors. The brass hardware, including the keyhole escutcheon and hinges, has acquired patina consistent with age. The craftsmanship is evident in the precise joinery, the framing of the doors, and the consistent patterning of the rivets. The beech wood displays subtle grain variation and a warm finish that contrasts with the deep blue leather.
Otto Schulz, active in Gothenburg during the early to mid-20th century, was known for combining traditional craftsmanship with decorative innovation, especially through the use of upholstery techniques and surface ornamentation. His work for Boet often blurred the line between furniture design and interior decoration, resulting in pieces that were both functional and sculptural.
The cabinet measures 100 cm in width, 38 cm in depth, and 116.5 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 39.4 inches by 15 inches by 45.9 inches. It is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and patina, particularly visible on the leather panels and brass components, consistent with its age and materials.
