Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model 9067, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced in the 1940s by Taito in Finland. The piece exemplifies Tynell’s signature fusion of industrial functionality with refined decorative elements, a hallmark of his influential role in shaping modern Finnish lighting design.
The lamp features a cylindrical outer shade made from painted metal in a warm yellow tone, which gives it a distinctive vintage character. Near the bottom edge of the cylinder, a precise series of perforations is arranged in a uniform pattern, serving both decorative and practical purposes. These openings allow light to escape laterally and upward, creating a delicate halo of illumination on the ceiling when the lamp is lit.
Inside the main shade, a secondary brass-toned inner cylinder reflects the light, enhancing its warmth and contributing to an even, ambient diffusion. This internal brass surface not only improves the quality of the illumination but also adds a luxurious visual contrast to the matte yellow exterior. The interplay between the metal finishes highlights Tynell’s mastery in balancing utilitarian forms with rich material expression.
The lamp is mounted flush to the ceiling with a polished brass element that anchors the structure and visually integrates the fixture into its setting. The overall composition is compact yet visually impactful, suitable for a range of applications including corridors, smaller rooms, or grouped in larger spaces.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most celebrated lighting designers, known for his poetic use of perforated metal, brass, and glass. His collaborations with Taito, where he served as lead designer, produced some of the most iconic lighting fixtures of the mid-20th century, blending craftsmanship with a timeless, modernist sensibility.
The dimensions of the lamp are 16 cm in height and 32 cm in diameter. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 6.3 inches high and 12.6 inches in diameter.
