Information

This rare ceiling lamp, model 9060/10102, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Arnold Wiigs Fabrikker in Norway between 1950 and 1952. The fixture features polished brass construction with a wide, shallow dish-shaped shade supported by a symmetrical double-rod suspension. The brass exterior is meticulously perforated with a constellation-like pattern of small holes, creating a diffused, starry lighting effect when illuminated.

The shade’s inverted dome form is geometrically precise, softened by the curvature of the brass surface. Its interior is finished in white lacquer to enhance light reflection and diffusion. At the center beneath the shade, a diffuser composed of concentric circular bands over opaline glass is secured by three radial brass arms, effectively controlling glare and directing downward light. The fixture houses three bulbs mounted on a clean white enamel base, emphasizing functionality and simplicity.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a leading Finnish lighting designer renowned for his poetic and refined approach to functional illumination. While many of his designs were produced by Finnish manufacturers Taito and Idman, this particular model’s manufacture by Arnold Wiigs Fabrikker in Norway illustrates the international reach of his work during the early 1950s. The lamp embodies Tynell’s characteristic design language, combining lightness of form, material refinement, and a subtle interplay of light and shadow through its perforated surfaces.

This piece is a notable example of Scandinavian mid-century design where utility and decorative aesthetics intersect. It is in very good vintage condition, showing a light patina and minor surface wear on the brass consistent with its age. All original components—including the brass shade, internal diffuser, and suspension system—are intact.

The lamp measures 55.5 cm in diameter and 58 cm in height, approximately 21.9 x 22.8 inches.
