Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model 9053, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland. It is an exceptional example of Tynell’s mid-century design sensibility, which skillfully blends traditional craftsmanship with the refined functionalism of Scandinavian modernism. The lamp exemplifies the elegant, understated luxury that defines much of Tynell’s work, with careful attention to material, proportion, and light diffusion.
The upper and lower portions of the lamp are composed of warm, polished brass, featuring a cylindrical form that tapers slightly toward the center. The brass is segmented into horizontal bands that add depth and articulation to the design. This vertical symmetry and detailing provide visual structure while also reinforcing the sense of balance between the lamp’s decorative and functional roles. The brass surface shows a gentle, natural patina typical for a well-preserved vintage piece, which enhances its character without compromising its integrity.
The central shade is made of smooth opaline glass, shaped into a wide, shallow bowl. This form is designed to diffuse light softly and evenly, creating a gentle ambient glow when the lamp is illuminated. The opaline material provides a warm white tone, harmonizing with the golden brass and contributing to a cohesive visual language. The glass shade is intact, free from visible cracks, chips, or discoloration, and remains a functional and aesthetic focal point of the fixture.
The condition of the lamp is very good. The brass retains much of its original sheen, with minor surface wear and oxidation that attest to the lamp’s age and authenticity. The glass is clean and structurally sound, and the overall construction remains tight and stable, reflecting the quality of production by Taito Oy.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) is widely recognized as a foundational figure in Finnish lighting design. His work for Taito Oy during the mid-20th century introduced new standards of elegance and material finesse in everyday lighting. Known for incorporating brass, perforated elements, and opaline glass, Tynell created designs that were both sculptural and utilitarian. Model 9053 is a prime example of his ability to elevate lighting design through harmonious proportions and expert material combinations.
