Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
A very rare ceiling lamp model 9020 designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. The design exemplifies Tynell’s characteristic ability to combine elegance with a subtle decorative softness, expressed through the refined interplay of brass and glass.
The structure is composed of a central brass stem extending into a symmetrical arrangement of gracefully curved arms. Each arm supports a trumpet-shaped glass shade, forming a balanced and sculptural composition. The shades are executed in a softly tinted, satin-finished glass that diffuses the light into a warm and atmospheric glow. When illuminated, the lamp creates an intimate and layered light, with each shade acting as an individual light source while contributing to a cohesive overall ambience.
Distinctive decorative elements are present throughout the fixture, including the coiled brass details at the junctions and the bundled central column. These elements add texture and visual rhythm to the otherwise fluid lines, highlighting Tynell’s attention to craftsmanship and ornamentation without overwhelming the design. The brass surface displays a natural patina with variations in tone, ranging from warm golden hues to slightly darker areas, enhancing the vintage character.
The lamp measures 55 cm in diameter and 82 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 21.7 inches in diameter and 32.3 inches in height. The condition is good, with minor signs of wear consistent with age and use. The glass shades appear to be later replacements, maintaining the intended aesthetic while differing from the original production.
