Information

Unique commissioned ceiling lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. Executed in copper with handwoven raffia shades, the lamp is an expressive example of Tynell’s organic and poetic approach to lighting design, combining sculptural metalwork with natural materials in a distinctly Nordic modernist composition. The piece was specially commissioned for a private residence designed by architect Dag Englund, further reinforcing its rarity and architectural provenance.

The elegant construction is characterized by a long, slender horizontal copper rod suspended from a circular canopy, from which two softly curved supports descend in symmetrical balance. The flowing lower section creates a rhythmic undulating silhouette, contrasting beautifully with the geometric woven shades. The shades are crafted in woven raffia with rounded rectangular form, allowing the warm light to diffuse through the natural fibers and produce a soft atmospheric glow. When illuminated, the lamp creates delicate linear shadow effects across the ceiling and surrounding surfaces, emphasizing the texture and translucency of the raffia.

The copper has developed a rich and varied patina over time, with warm reddish-brown tones and subtle surface markings that enhance the character of the piece. The combination of oxidized copper and natural raffia embodies the refined material sensitivity associated with Paavo Tynell’s work during the 1940s, where craftsmanship and atmosphere were given equal importance.

A rare and highly decorative custom-made Scandinavian modern ceiling lamp with strong architectural presence and exceptional material quality.
