Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
A very rare and early ceiling lamp model 9015 designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy, Finland, during the 1940s. This exceptional example embodies the refined organic elegance that established Tynell as one of the most influential figures in Scandinavian lighting design. Executed in brass with delicate decorative metalwork and retaining its original shades, the lamp represents an important and highly sought-after period of Finnish modernism, where craftsmanship and poetic natural motifs were combined with remarkable sophistication.
The five-light chandelier is constructed around a central brass stem supporting gracefully curved arms that extend outward in a balanced radial composition. Between the light sources, an intricate arrangement of hand-formed brass foliage rises from the center, creating a sculptural silhouette reminiscent of flowering meadow plants. The decorative elements feature Tynell’s characteristic attention to nature-inspired details, with finely shaped leaves and hanging floral forms composed of interconnected brass loops. These ornamental components introduce a sense of movement and lightness while maintaining the restrained elegance associated with Nordic design of the period.
The brass surfaces have developed a rich and attractive patina over decades of use, enhancing the lamp’s depth and character. The original pale pink shades remain present, providing a soft contrast to the warm metallic structure. Their textured material and hand-finished stitched edges contribute to the lamp’s handcrafted appearance while diffusing light into a warm and atmospheric glow. When illuminated, the shades produce a particularly inviting ambience, highlighting the sculptural brass details and emphasizing the lamp’s decorative qualities.
Model 9015 belongs to the early production of Taito Oy and is considerably rarer than many of Paavo Tynell’s later and more widely documented designs. The combination of organic ornamentation, flowing brass arms, original shades, and preserved period details makes this example an important collector’s piece and a representative work from one of the most celebrated eras of Finnish lighting design.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The brass shows natural wear and patination, contributing to its authentic character and historical appeal.
