Paavo Tynell ceiling lamps
This rare pair of ceiling lamps was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland as a commissioned work. The lamps are constructed from white-lacquered metal, brass, and a circular glass diffuser, forming a symmetrical double-cone structure characteristic of Tynell’s refined yet playful approach to lighting. Each lamp features two flared metal shades joined by a polished brass band at the center. The upper and lower shades are perforated with small star-shaped motifs arranged in a continuous ring, allowing points of light to pass through when illuminated.
The lower section is fitted with a frosted glass diffuser held in place by three brass clips. This element softens the downward light and creates an even distribution across the room, while the open upper shade allows additional illumination to reflect against the ceiling. The brass components include the central band, suspension tube, and ceiling canopy. They display a warm tone enhanced by natural patina beneath the refinishing. The white lacquered surfaces are smooth with consistent coloration following restoration.
Paavo Tynell, one of Finland’s most renowned lighting designers, often integrated decorative perforations, sculptural metalwork, and elegant symmetry into his luminaires. His collaborations with Taito Oy produced numerous custom commissions for public and private interiors. These lamps reflect a transitional period in his work, combining functional lighting technology with ornamental details that reference craft traditions and Nordic modernism. The star cutouts are a recurring motif in Tynell’s designs, contributing to the atmospheric quality of the light both directly and indirectly.
The lamps are presented in good restored condition, with refinished surfaces and updated wiring while retaining original construction details.
