Paavo Tynell ceiling lamps

This rare ceiling lamp or flush mount, model 9068, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland. It is a quintessential example of Tynell’s mid-century lighting design, combining precise industrial detailing with a lyrical, atmospheric quality that defines his most celebrated work. Often referred to as the “Starry Sky” lamp, model 9068 embodies Tynell’s signature fusion of craftsmanship, material richness, and poetic minimalism.

The fixture features a square form, constructed from black-painted metal, with delicately perforated patterns distributed across its surface. These perforations serve both an aesthetic and functional purpose—allowing pinpoints of light to escape and cast subtle, starlike projections on the surrounding surfaces. The matte black finish of the shade acts as a visual foil, enhancing the contrast between light and dark and grounding the more reflective elements of the design.

At the base of the lamp is a brass louver grid composed of evenly spaced horizontal slats. These louvers are designed to diffuse light downwards while adding a layer of visual complexity. The brass is polished but has developed a soft patina with age, lending the piece a warm, tactile presence. The interplay between the dark shade and the golden brass underscores the geometric clarity and material contrast central to Tynell’s lighting language.

The lamp is in excellent vintage condition. Minor signs of age-related wear are visible but do not detract from its function or aesthetic integrity. The brass louvers remain structurally sound and exhibit a naturally aged finish that enhances the overall character of the lamp.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973), often described as the “man who illuminated Finland,” was one of the most influential figures in Finnish lighting design. His work with Taito Oy during the 1940s and 1950s helped define a uniquely Nordic approach to lighting—combining technical innovation with elegant, emotionally resonant forms. The 9068 model exemplifies Tynell’s mastery of indirect lighting and decorative restraint, maintaining a sculptural presence even in compact form.

The lamp measures 24 cm in width, depth, and height (9.4 x 9.4 x 9.4 inches), making it suitable for ceiling or wall installation in both domestic and architectural settings where understated sophistication and diffused lighting are desired.
