Information

This floor lamp, model 9624, was designed by the Finnish designer Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. The lamp is primarily constructed from brass, featuring a wrapped leather detail on the stem that exemplifies Tynell’s refined use of materials and attention to craftsmanship. The design is defined by a slim cylindrical shaft supporting a large conical perforated shade mounted on a vertical rod. The shade’s numerous small perforations create a decorative lighting effect when illuminated, casting a patterned glow onto surrounding surfaces.

The brass surface has developed a natural patina consistent with its age and original materials. Visible surface wear and oxidation contribute to the piece’s authenticity and vintage character. The leather grip, positioned at hand height, provides a tactile and functional contrast to the smooth metal surfaces, enhancing both grip and visual interest.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) is regarded as one of the foremost figures in Finnish lighting design. As a founding member of Taito Oy in 1918, Tynell played a central role in Finnish decorative arts and lighting. His designs are noted for their elegant use of perforated brass and glass, merging functional modernism with decorative detail. Tynell’s work embodies the Scandinavian modernist ethos, focusing on craftsmanship, proportion, and the creation of ambient light.

The lamp measures 22.5 cm in width, 23 cm in depth, and 136.5 cm in height, approximately 8.9 inches wide, 9.1 inches deep, and 53.7 inches tall. This piece reflects a balance of form and function characteristic of mid-century Finnish lighting design.
