Paavo Tynell floor lamps
A highly sought-after pair of floor lamps, model 9602, commonly known as the “Chinese Hat”, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. Among Tynell’s most iconic post-war designs, this model perfectly encapsulates his ability to combine refined craftsmanship, elegant proportions, and atmospheric lighting. The distinctive conical shades evoke the silhouette of traditional East Asian hats, lending the lamps a sculptural presence while maintaining the understated sophistication characteristic of Scandinavian modernism.
Each lamp features a slender stem wrapped in natural cane, a material frequently employed by Tynell to introduce warmth and texture to his lighting designs. The delicate cane-wrapped column rises from a thin circular brass base, creating a graceful and visually light composition. The newly made fabric shades faithfully preserve the original character of the design, complemented by brass finials and fittings that have developed a rich patina over time.
The ingenious shade construction directs the light downward while softly illuminating the interior of the shade, producing a warm and inviting glow. When lit, the lamps create a serene atmosphere and project subtle gradients of light onto surrounding surfaces. The combination of brass, cane, and fabric exemplifies Tynell’s mastery of material contrasts and his exceptional understanding of light as a design element.
Paavo Tynell is widely regarded as one of the most influential lighting designers of the twentieth century. His work for Idman and Taito established Finnish lighting design on the international stage, and original examples of his designs are today represented in prestigious collections and highly coveted by collectors worldwide. The model 9602 stands among his most celebrated creations, appreciated for its timeless elegance and architectural simplicity.
The lamps remain in good vintage condition with minor age-related wear and patina consistent with their age and use. The brass surfaces display an attractive mellow patina, while the cane-wrapped stems show natural variation and gentle signs of aging. The shades are newly produced and in excellent condition.
