Paavo Tynell table lamp
This rare table lamp, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s, is a quintessential example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. Fabricated entirely from brass, the lamp demonstrates Tynell’s characteristic integration of artisanal metalwork, refined geometry, and poetic illumination.
The lamp features a broad, dome-shaped perforated brass shade supported by a delicate twin-rod U-shaped brass stem. The surface of the shade is meticulously perforated with evenly distributed pinholes forming concentric circles and radiating patterns. These perforations softly filter the light when illuminated, creating a starry, atmospheric glow. Two ornamental finials with coiled brass filaments are positioned on top of the shade, serving both decorative and functional purposes as mounting points.
The finish is a natural aged brass with a rich patina, exhibiting variations in tone, oxidation spots, and light surface wear consistent with decades of use. These qualities contribute to the lamp’s authenticity and historical integrity. The flat, rounded square base mirrors the simplicity of the upper dome in its curvature, providing stability and a visual counterbalance.
Stamped beneath the base is the maker’s mark “OY TAITO AB” along with the model number “527” and the notation “Made in Finland” Taito Oy was a pivotal Finnish metalwork and lighting manufacturer, closely associated with Tynell throughout the designer’s most prolific period. Paavo Tynell (1890–1973), often referred to as “the man who illuminated Finland” was renowned for elevating lighting design to an art form. His work synthesized traditional craftsmanship with functionalist ideals, and his luminaires often featured perforated brass, floral or natural motifs, and diffused light effects.
This lamp embodies the mid-century Scandinavian aesthetic, where modest materials are elevated through detailed workmanship and balanced form. Tynell’s influence extended beyond Finland, and his pieces are now highly sought after for their sculptural elegance and warm lighting quality.
The dimensions of the lamp are approximately 38 cm in diameter and 49 cm in height, corresponding to 15 inches in diameter and 19.3 inches in height.
