Percival Lafer side tables
This pair of side tables was designed by Percival Lafer and produced by Lafer MP in Brazil during the 1970s. The design reflects Lafer’s characteristic approach to functional modernism, combining robust construction with refined detailing and a clear emphasis on material quality. While firmly rooted in mid-century design principles, the tables also show the more expressive and structural tendencies often associated with Brazilian modern furniture of the period.
The tables are executed in rosewood, with richly figured surfaces displaying deep brown tones and pronounced grain variation. The rectangular tops are framed by slightly raised edges, forming shallow tray-like surfaces that provide both visual definition and practical function. The legs are solid and rectilinear, joined to the frames with visible metal fasteners that emphasize the construction and add a subtle industrial note to the otherwise warm wooden surfaces.
Structurally, the tables are sturdy and well-balanced, with proportions that allow them to function equally well as side tables, low occasional tables, or complementary pieces alongside seating. The exposed joinery and hardware underline Lafer’s interest in honest construction, where the method of assembly becomes part of the aesthetic rather than being concealed.
The pair is in excellent vintage condition, showing signs of usage and a natural patina consistent with age. Minor surface wear and tonal variation are present, contributing to the depth and character of the rosewood without detracting from the overall integrity or functionality. No structural issues are observed.
Each table measures 69 cm in width, 52.5 cm in depth, and 32.5 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 27.2 inches wide, 20.7 inches deep, and 12.8 inches high.
