Percival Lafer

Percival Lafer (1936–2016) was a Brazilian furniture designer and entrepreneur whose work helped define modern Brazilian interiors in the second half of the 20th century. Known for combining industrial production techniques with rich natural materials, his designs balance relaxed comfort with bold structural presence.

Biography
Lafer was trained in architecture at Mackenzie University in São Paulo. In the early 1960s he joined the family furniture business, Móveis Lafer, and soon began designing pieces that could be efficiently manufactured while maintaining a strong design identity. His approach embraced modular construction and innovative assembly methods, allowing furniture to be shipped flat and assembled with ease.

His designs are characterised by generous proportions, low profiles, and a relaxed informality suited to modern living. Lafer frequently paired solid wood frames with leather or canvas upholstery, using visible straps, cushions, and exposed structural elements to emphasise comfort and construction. Brazilian hardwoods such as jacaranda (rosewood) contributed warmth and visual depth.

Among his most recognised works are lounge chairs and sofas that combine sling-like seating with robust wooden structures. These pieces reflect both the casual lifestyle of Brazilian modernism and a pragmatic approach to production and distribution.

Lafer’s work gained international popularity during the 1960s and 1970s, particularly in Europe and North America, where his furniture was appreciated for its durability, comfort, and distinctive character. Today his designs remain collectible and admired for their balance of craftsmanship, industrial logic, and relaxed modern elegance.
