Information

This rare coffee table, model 6900 (also known as AX), was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark in 1951. The table combines a round top in teak with legs and supporting elements in beech, creating a subtle contrast between the warm reddish tone of the teak and the lighter, more neutral character of the beech. The legs are connected by cross-stretchers and feature the characteristic Y-shaped support detail where they meet the tabletop, a signature of Hvidt & Mølgaard’s structural clarity and attention to detail.

The design reflects the duo’s architectural approach to furniture, emphasizing lightness, strength, and material efficiency. The round top offers a generous surface, while the relatively slim legs keep the piece visually light, allowing it to integrate harmoniously into a variety of settings. This example has been completely restored, preserving its warm finish and ensuring structural integrity, while still displaying minor signs of usage consistent with careful handling over time.

Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) were pioneers of Danish modern furniture design, working together from 1944 to 1975. Their designs for Fritz Hansen and other leading Danish manufacturers were instrumental in defining the clean, functional lines that came to symbolize mid-century Scandinavian design. Fritz Hansen, established in 1872, is one of Denmark’s most significant furniture producers, known for collaborations with designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner.

This coffee table represents the essence of mid-century Scandinavian design, merging organic materials, thoughtful joinery, and a timeless form that balances function and elegance.

Dimensions: 90 cm diameter, 56 cm high (approximately 35.4 x 22 inches).
