Information

This rare coffee table, model 6743, also known as the “X-table” was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark during the 1960s. The table exemplifies the refined and functional design principles of mid-century Danish modernism, combining natural materials with precise craftsmanship and innovative engineering.

The tabletop is crafted from solid teak, showcasing a rich golden hue and expressive grain structure. The table’s surface is defined by raised, subtly upturned edges on the long sides, creating a shallow tray-like effect that highlights the flat, independent visual plane of the top. The teak surface is meticulously finished, with finely joined edges that demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship typical of the period.

The distinctive base of the table is made from solid stained mahogany, with legs arranged in a crisscross X-configuration. This base is the defining visual and technical feature of the design. Each pair of legs intersects at precisely machined brass joints, which serve as both a pivot and a focal point. The intersection of the legs creates a dynamic, tensile appearance, while also providing stability. Diagonal brass tension rods run beneath the tabletop between the legs, contributing to the structural rigidity of the design and reinforcing its overall engineering.

The condition of the table is excellent, with minimal signs of age-related wear. The teak surface retains its natural sheen and integrity, while the stained mahogany legs are structurally sound. The brass elements show only mild oxidation, typical for the period, adding a patina that enhances the table’s authenticity.

Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) were leading figures in mid-century Danish design. They co-founded their design studio, Hvidt & Mølgaard, in 1944 and were pioneers in combining traditional craftsmanship with modern industrial methods. Their work is characterized by refined minimalism and advanced structural design, with notable contributions to the development of folding chairs, daybeds, and lightweight modular furniture.

Fritz Hansen, established in 1872, is one of Denmark’s most prominent furniture manufacturers. In the postwar period, the company played a key role in promoting Danish modern design internationally, collaborating with designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Børge Mogensen, and Hvidt & Mølgaard.

The dimensions of the table are 150.5 cm in width, 61.5 cm in depth, and 51.5 cm in height (approximately 59.3 inches x 24.2 inches x 20.3 inches). This coffee table is a prime example of mid-century Danish design, combining natural materials, innovative construction, and functional beauty in a timeless piece.
