Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen table
This coffee table was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Son in Denmark in 1957. It represents an early and highly refined example of the duo’s work, characterized by structural clarity, precise proportions, and an emphasis on craftsmanship. The model is considered rare, both due to its limited production and the complexity of its construction.
The table is constructed in solid rosewood with a contrasting formica surface. The rosewood displays a deep, warm tone with pronounced and lively grain patterns, particularly visible along the tabletop edges and the legs. The formica top introduces a subtle material contrast that was typical of the period, combining durability with a restrained modern appearance. The tabletop features softly rounded edges that taper elegantly toward the corners, contributing to the light visual expression despite the substantial materials.
The underframe is composed of solid rosewood legs connected by discreet stretchers, creating a stable yet visually open structure. The legs are carefully shaped with gentle transitions between horizontal and vertical elements, demonstrating the designers’ focus on refined joinery and sculptural detailing. The construction reflects France & Son’s high production standards during the late 1950s, with precise joints and well-balanced proportions throughout.
The table is in good vintage condition and has been completely restored. The restoration has preserved the original character of the materials while ensuring structural integrity and a consistent surface finish. Minor signs of age may remain, consistent with the table’s history, but there are no significant defects affecting function or appearance.
The dimensions are 148 cm in width, 60 cm in depth, and 50.5 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 58.3 inches wide, 23.6 inches deep, and 19.9 inches high.
