Information

This rare and exceptional coffee table was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Son in Denmark in 1957. It represents one of the finest examples of Danish mid-century design, combining refined craftsmanship, advanced joinery, and a distinctly modern organic form.

The table is executed in solid rosewood, exhibiting deep, expressive grain patterns and rich tonal variations typical of the species. The tabletop features gently curved edges and raised lips along the sides, demonstrating a sculptural precision that enhances both its tactile and visual appeal. The frame is constructed with rounded legs connected by crossbars, emphasizing the designers’ mastery of proportion and balance. The meticulous joinery, including exposed finger joints in contrasting wood, highlights the artisanal character and structural honesty of the piece.

Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were among Denmark’s most innovative postwar designers, known for their focus on clarity of construction and modular forms. Their collaboration with France & Son — a key manufacturer in Danish modern furniture — resulted in pieces that combined industrial precision with fine cabinetmaking tradition.

The table has been completely restored and is in good vintage condition, with minor traces of age that preserve the authenticity of its surface. Its sculptural silhouette, craftsmanship, and material integrity make it an iconic representative of Scandinavian modernism from the 1950s.

Dimensions: 147.5 × 60 × 50 cm (58.1 × 23.6 × 19.7 inches).
