Information

Set of six dining chairs model 350 designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by Søborg Møbler in Denmark in 1958. Each chair is constructed with a solid teak frame and woven cane seat and backrest. The frames are executed in warmly toned teak with straight, square legs and simple stretchers, while the seat and back are formed by tightly woven natural cane. The backrest is slightly curved in plan and gently inclined, giving support while maintaining a visually light appearance. The woven cane shows a fine basket-like pattern with a consistent rhythm across the surface.

The overall geometry is compact and rectilinear, with carefully softened edges and subtly tapered elements typical of Danish modern craftsmanship. The seat has a shallow, ergonomic curvature created by the controlled tension in the cane, allowing a comfortable sitting surface without additional upholstery. The combination of teak and cane provides a contrast between the darker, oil-finished wood and the lighter, honey-coloured plant fibre, emphasising the structure and the handcrafted weave.

Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were leading figures of Danish mid-century design, known for their precise detailing and interest in industrial production combined with traditional techniques. Many of their designs explored laminated wood and light, stackable forms, while the model 350 demonstrates their approach to modest, well-proportioned dining furniture. Søborg Møbler was an important Danish manufacturer collaborating with several major designers; the company was recognised for high-quality joinery and the consistent execution of modern designs for domestic use. This set represents mid-century Scandinavian design values of clarity, material honesty and functional comfort.

The chairs are in good vintage condition with signs of usage and patina. The teak frames show minor dents, scratches and colour variations consistent with age, while the cane has small irregularities, local wear and slight darkening in exposed areas but remains structurally intact. The patina on both wood and cane contributes to the authentic character of the set. As with all woven seating, care should be taken with loading and humidity to preserve the cane over time.

Each chair measures approximately 49 cm in width, 43.5 cm in depth and 74 cm in height, with a seat height of 41 cm. This corresponds to about 19.3 x 17.1 x 29.1 inches, with a seat height of approximately 16.1 inches.
