Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model FH-6135—commonly referred to as the X-chair—was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. Introduced in the mid-20th century, these chairs exemplify the designers’ commitment to structural innovation, visual lightness, and material refinement, all central to the Danish modern aesthetic.
Each chair is constructed from laminated beech, shaped into an elegant and architecturally expressive frame. The warm, honey-toned wood reveals a tight, consistent grain, and the surfaces are smoothly finished with a natural sheen that emphasizes the craftsmanship and curvature of the form. The hallmark of the design is its X-shaped side profile, formed by intersecting legs and stretchers. This configuration not only defines the chair’s visual identity but also provides stability and structural coherence without visual heaviness.
The seats and backrests are woven from peddig pipe—also known as rattan core—executed in a tight, precise pattern that offers both flexibility and durability. The weaving is aged with a gentle patina that lends character and authenticity, and remains in very good condition with minor, expected signs of use. The combination of smooth wood and textured rattan creates a material contrast that is both tactile and visually balanced.
Despite their minimalist appearance, the chairs are ergonomically thoughtful. The angled backrest and gently reclined seat provide comfort, while the open frame and airy weave contribute to a sense of lightness and transparency in a room. The joinery is precise and discreet, with no visible fasteners, reinforcing the seamless aesthetic for which Danish cabinetmaking is renowned.
Condition is excellent vintage. The wooden frames display only minor surface marks and light wear consistent with careful use. The rattan remains intact, firm, and evenly toned, without major breaks or discoloration.
Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were pioneers in the Danish modern movement, celebrated for their experimentation with laminated wood and their forward-thinking approach to form and production. The X-chair FH-6135 is among their most iconic and technically sophisticated works, and its production by Fritz Hansen further elevates its historical and design significance.
