Pierre Forssell ceiling lamps
This rare set of three ceiling lamps was designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s. Each lamp exemplifies the Brutalist aesthetic, showcasing a highly textured surface and a sculptural presence that typifies Forssell’s expressive and material-forward design approach.
The lamps are constructed entirely from brass and consist of three main elements: a smooth cylindrical upper body, a perforated central section with a cast, organic texture, and a lower cylindrical perforated diffuser. The pierced design of the middle and bottom sections allows light to emit through the circular openings, producing a warm, patterned glow when illuminated. The contrast between the polished brass band and the roughly textured segments emphasizes the artisanal and tactile quality of the pieces.
Each lamp measures 8.5 cm in diameter and 18 cm in height, with an overall hanging height of approximately 70 cm. The condition is excellent, with only minor age-appropriate wear visible on the brass surfaces. This model is characteristic of Forssell’s collaboration with Skultuna, a foundry with centuries of metallurgical craftsmanship, and reflects his transition from formalist modernism into a more brutalist.
