Poul Cadovius bookcase
The “Cado” wall system, designed by Poul Cadovius and produced in Denmark during the 1960s, is one of the most refined examples of modular Scandinavian furniture design. Constructed in richly figured rosewood, the system demonstrates Cadovius’ vision of adaptable, space-saving interiors that combine architectural lightness with practical versatility.
This configuration includes multiple wall-mounted uprights supporting adjustable shelves, a drop-front desk module, a cabinet with reeded glass sliding doors, and a lower chest of drawers. The design allows for complete flexibility — each element can be repositioned to accommodate changing functional or aesthetic needs. The glass-fronted cabinet introduces a visual rhythm through its vertical texture, while the rosewood surfaces, characterized by deep grain patterns and warm tonal variations, highlight the material’s natural depth and craftsmanship.
Poul Cadovius (1911–2011) was among Denmark’s most innovative furniture designers, known for his modular systems that transformed the way furniture interacted with architecture. His designs, particularly the Royal System and later Cado models, reflected the modernist ideal of functional minimalism and remain icons of mid-century design.
This example is preserved in good vintage condition, with consistent signs of use and a beautiful, even patina.
