Poul Cadovius sofa
This very rare three-seater sofa was designed by Poul Cadovius and produced by France & Son in Denmark during the 1960s. The piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and structural clarity that characterize Cadovius’s work, merging modular logic with rich material expression.
The frame is constructed in rosewood, displaying an exceptional basket-weave pattern along the sides and back. This intricate veneering technique creates a rhythmic surface of interlocking light and dark grain tones, emphasizing both craftsmanship and geometric precision. The wood has been completely restored, revealing its natural depth and luster while maintaining the authenticity of the original joinery and design details. The solid wood legs feature exposed dovetail joints, providing both visual and structural integrity.
The sofa has been newly reupholstered in a deep blue fabric, echoing the modernist color palette of the period. The cushions are firm yet comfortable, with tufted detailing that offers subtle texture and a sense of depth. The contrast between the saturated textile and the warm rosewood gives the piece a striking yet balanced presence.
Poul Cadovius, known for his architectural approach to furniture, designed modular systems and freestanding pieces that emphasized lightness, proportion, and material honesty. This sofa represents a rare example of his lesser-seen seating designs, aligning his modular philosophy with domestic comfort.
Good vintage condition, fully restored with new upholstery and refinished wood surfaces.
