Information

This rare PK61 coffee table was designed by Poul Kjærholm in the 1950s and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark. The table features a square honed Carrara marble top, distinguished by its characteristic grey veining against a white background, indicative of its Italian origin. The marble slab rests on a brushed stainless steel frame composed of four flat bar legs connected with visible, precise corner joints. The overall design is architectural and minimalist, reflecting Kjærholm’s lifelong focus on industrial materials and structural clarity.

Originally conceived in 1956, the PK61 is notable for its modular construction, where the tabletop sits loosely on the steel frame, allowing the two elements to maintain visual independence. Kjærholm’s design ethos was shaped by the Bauhaus movement and his background as a cabinetmaker and architect. E. Kold Christensen, the original manufacturer, produced these tables before production shifted to Fritz Hansen after Christensen’s death. Items from the E. Kold Christensen era are highly sought after due to their precision and historical significance.

This example is in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear consistent with age and use. The steel frame exhibits slight patination, especially at the joints, while the marble surface retains its original polish and texture, featuring natural variations and inclusions inherent to the stone. The underside of the frame is stamped with the E. Kold Christensen Denmark logo, verifying authenticity.

Measuring 80 cm wide, 80 cm deep, and 33 cm high (approximately 31.5 by 31.5 by 13 inches), this table is emblematic of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, combining organic material with industrial minimalism in a timeless, restrained form.
