Poul Kjærholm easy chair
This easy chair is the model PK-22, designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark. Introduced in 1955, the PK-22 is regarded as one of Kjærholm’s most refined seating designs, exemplifying his approach of reducing form to its structural and material essentials. The chair belongs to the early phase of his career, during which he explored the expressive potential of industrial materials combined with traditional craftsmanship.
The frame is executed in flat steel, bent into a continuous, lightly sprung structure that forms both the base and the supporting elements. The steel displays an even patina with visible oxidation and surface marks consistent with age and use, contributing to the character of the piece. The seat and backrest are woven in natural rattan, tightly executed and well preserved, with a warm tone that contrasts subtly with the cooler steel frame.
The profile is low and sculptural, with a gently reclined backrest and a shallow seat that emphasize relaxation while maintaining a clear architectural presence. Kjærholm’s intention was to create a chair that reads as a continuous line in space, where the woven surface appears suspended within the steel structure. This balance between lightness and structural clarity is a defining characteristic of the model.
The chair is in good vintage condition, showing signs of use and an attractive, honest patina to both the steel and the rattan. There are no structural issues, and the weaving remains intact and stable.
