Information

This is a very rare writing desk designed by Poul Volther and produced by FDB Møbler in Denmark in 1958. The piece is a refined example of Danish functionalist design from the mid-century era, balancing utilitarian flexibility with a sculptural aesthetic. It is constructed from solid oak and teak veneer with discreet brass hardware details.

The desk features a rectangular top with softly rounded edges and slightly overhanging ends. It rests on a visually light, yet structurally sound, framework of splayed round oak legs. The desk is outfitted with two suspended drawer modules on either side, each fitted with a pair of drawers. Notably, the drawer units are modular and removable, allowing for customizable positioning or use without drawers altogether, a concept aligned with FDB Møbler’s democratic and user-oriented design philosophy.

The teak used for the top and drawer fronts displays an even, warm tone with a straight grain pattern and subtle figure. Oak is used for the legs and support elements, providing both tonal contrast and structural integrity. Drawer pulls are carved into the wood, continuing the minimalist approach, and the joinery is precise and largely concealed.

The piece has been restored and is in good vintage condition, with small signs of use and a gentle surface patina. The restoration respects the original character, maintaining the wood’s natural finish and avoiding overpolishing.

Poul Volther (1923–2001) was a Danish furniture designer associated with the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts and later with FDB Møbler, where he was artistic director. He was known for his ability to synthesize functionalism with warm material tactility, often emphasizing user needs and efficient production without compromising design integrity. FDB Møbler, established in 1942, was a pioneering cooperative that aimed to make high-quality furniture accessible to the general public, working with leading designers such as Børge Mogensen and Volther.

This desk is an archetype of mid-century Scandinavian design—rational, adaptable, and elegantly understated.

The dimensions are approximately 160 cm wide, 82 cm deep, and 71 cm high, corresponding to 63 inches in width, 32.3 inches in depth, and 28 inches in height.
