Preben Dal ceiling lamps
This pair of ceiling lamps was designed by Preben Dal and produced by Hans Følsgaard in Denmark during the 1960s. Crafted entirely from aluminum, each lamp features interlocking, vertically arranged V-shaped fins that are radially distributed around a central light source. These staggered aluminum elements function both as diffusers and reflectors, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow when illuminated while concealing the bulb from direct view.
The aluminum panels display natural age-related oxidation with a slightly mottled and irregular finish, adding depth and texture to their metallic sheen. The internal structure is supported by a circular frame and radial struts, with the electrical cord and socket assembly suspended through the center. This material choice and construction reflect the industrial modernism prevalent in mid-century Scandinavian lighting design.
Preben Dal was a Danish designer renowned for his lighting works emphasizing modular geometries and innovative metal use. His collaboration with Hans Følsgaard Elektro, a producer of technical and architectural lighting in the 1950s and 1960s, yielded several iconic designs. This model embodies Dal’s aesthetic of combining functional form with sculptural clarity, aligned with Scandinavian modernism’s focus on honest materials and architectural influence.
The lamps are in good vintage condition, exhibiting uniform patina and oxidation consistent with their age and material.
Each lamp measures 29 centimeters in width, 25 centimeters in depth, and 51 centimeters in height (approximately 11.4 by 9.8 by 20 inches).
