Preben Fabricius & Jørgen Kastholm office chair
This very rare model FK 84 office chair was designed in 1962 by Danish architects Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm and produced by Kill International in Germany. The chair exemplifies a refined blend of Scandinavian modernism and German functionalism, characteristic of the duo’s collaborative designs in the early 1960s. It is part of a series of executive and lounge seating created for sophisticated corporate and architectural interiors.
The chair’s construction combines chromed steel, Brazilian rosewood veneer, and original black leather upholstery. The seat and backrest feature generous curves and padding, covered in supple black leather with tight button tufting. The leather exhibits a soft sheen and natural creasing consistent with age and use. The rear shell is clad in book-matched rosewood veneer, displaying a rich reddish-brown color and striking dark grain patterns that add warmth and visual contrast to the industrial materials.
The frame rests on a three-star chromed steel base with castors, supporting a swivel central column. The base has a sculptural Y-shaped profile that tapers into four splayed, polished chrome legs. Integrated armrests feature black leather pads matching the upholstery. The shell presents a continuous, fluid profile where seat and back merge seamlessly, edged with a subtle lip where rosewood meets leather.
The chair is in very good original condition, showing minor wear to the leather and light patina on the steel consistent with age. The rosewood veneer remains well preserved with no significant fading or structural issues.
The FK 84 chair embodies mid-century modern design principles through its use of premium materials, minimal ornamentation, and architectural form. Fabricius and Kastholm’s work is renowned for clean lines, elegant proportions, and a balanced use of natural and industrial elements. Kill International, active in the 1960s and 70s, produced some of the era’s most iconic modernist furniture, emphasizing craftsmanship and precise engineering.
The chair measures 72 cm wide, 68 cm deep, and 81 cm high, with a seat height of 43 cm. In imperial measurements, this is approximately 28.3 inches wide, 26.8 inches deep, 31.9 inches high overall, and a seat height of 16.9 inches.
