Sten Hummel Gumaelius wall lamps
This rare and large wall lamp was designed by Sten Hummel-Gumaelius in 1955–56 and produced in Sweden. It was originally made for Norrstrandskyrkan in Karlstad, a church building that combined modern architectural simplicity with warm materiality, and this lamp reflects the same design ethos. The composition is characterised by a clear, linear structure and a precise balance between metal and glass components.
The fixture is made of brass with a warm, naturally aged surface, displaying light oxidation, patina, and small surface marks consistent with time. The supporting frame is built from rectangular brass sections forming a horizontal bar supported by diagonal braces, creating a distinct architectural expression. The geometric structure is both functional and decorative, allowing the lamp to project evenly from the wall while maintaining visual lightness.
Each of the four cylindrical shades is executed in white opaline glass, softly diffusing the light. The shades are held by minimal brass clips with small upward folds that secure the glass without dominating the design. When illuminated, the lamp emits a warm, even glow that enhances the surrounding brass tones and highlights the contrast between the matte glass and the metallic framework. One of the glass shades has been repaired, with the restoration visible upon close inspection but discreet when the repaired section is placed toward the wall.
The design represents the refined and functionalist aesthetic of mid-century Swedish ecclesiastical lighting. Hummel-Gumaelius, active during the postwar period, worked with a sensitivity to proportion and light quality typical of Scandinavian lighting design of the era. His works often balanced modern geometric forms with traditional craftsmanship, and this lamp exemplifies that synthesis through its combination of simple structural logic and the rich tactility of its materials.
Good vintage condition with small signs of use and natural ageing of the brass. The surface retains its original finish with minor irregularities and marks. The glass elements show minor imperfections from use and one professional repair as noted.
